Spoleto

Spoleto proudly claims ancient origins. Its boundaries were inhabited since the prehistory, while the first settlement was founded in 1000 BC. During the III century BC the Romans conquered the area and in the 241 BC a colony called Spoletium had been established. Since the first century BC, Spoleto is defined a magnificent town. The city grown steadily until in 1296 a new town wall had to be built, and still nowadays it warmly surround the city. In 1359, during the Popes exile in Avignon (France), the cardinal Egidio Albornoz erected the impressive Rocca Albornoz which has been the seat of the Popes' governors and for a certain period of Lucrezia Borgia (1499). In XVII and XVIII centuries, the local aristocracy families renovated their palaces and all the religious building, also with the support of roman architects and artists. A part from the architectural witnessing of a 2500 years of history, Spoleto is internationally renown for the Spoleto Festival, dreamed up in 1957 by the Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti(born in 1911). Also because of the Festival, which brings heavy-duty culture to Spoleto in the form of music, opera, dance, theatre, and art exhibitions showcased by premier Italian and international performers, Spoleto progressively turn into the nowadays celebrated multicultural gem of Centre Italy.
